EMAL News Volume 4 (Wednesday, April 12th, 2000)
-
Scott Johnson of JEOL is still busy installing the new JEOL 2010F AEM in
431 NC EMAL.
If you watch the 2010F webcam and the image is dark, it is because Scott is
attempting to record high resolution STEM images. The instrument has successfully
imaged 0.102nm gold lattice structure in regualr TEM mode and so Scott has installed the STEM
unit and the high angle annular dark field detector. Using this detector as a bright field
detector 0.34nm graphite images were successfully observed at 30fps on Tuesday, April 11th, 2000.
Silicon [220] type 0.192 spacings are the next goal.
-
Pete Burgner of Gatan will commence the installation of the Gatan Imaging Filter and TV camera systems
on Wednesday, April 19th, 2000.
-
The following two weeks will be taken up with testing of the instrument and then installation of the STEM unit.

A new Dell Pentium III PC has been setup in the North Campus EMAL in
Room 421. While this PC may be used for word processing and email,
it is primarily for data analysis. The TexSEM program "OIM Analysis" and the EDAX program
suite "EDAX Remote" are loaded on this PC. These two programs are hardware keyed,
they will not function on any other PC. Users should yield to allow those who need to use the analysis
programs preferred access.
A copy of Photoshop 5.5 is also to be found on this PC together with a copy of the Image Processing Tool
Kit by John and Chris Russ. Microsoft Office 2000 is also available on this computer.
