A Corrected View of the Future: Electron Optical Aberration
Correctors/Monochromators at JEOL
To avoid any contaminated whiff of commercialism, this presentation will concentrate
on the current state of aberration correction and beam monochromation for
the general field of electron microscopy. Since JEOL is also involved with
this field, many of the examples will include data and information from JEOL
aberration corrected and monochromated instruments. Though correction of
the spherical aberration has been realized, there are additional benefits
to correcting the chromatic aberration as well. Examples, calculations, and
directions for further improvement will be discussed. General topics on the
future of electron microscopes will be also be presented. These topics include
remote operation, improvement in stability and resistance to environmental
factors, new sensors and recording media, and problems associated with increasing
levels of complexity.
