EMAL Staff - General InformationThe routine management of the Central Campus EMAL is carried out by Carl Henderson, who is a full-time employee of the Department of Geological Sciences. In his day-to-day running of the laboratory he has the help of two graduate student research assistants who are also in the Department of Geological Sciences.North Campus EMAL is managed by Dr. John Mansfield who is an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MS&E). John Mansfield has over sixteen years experience in the field of electron microscopy and related microanalysis. Dr. Mansfield earned his Ph.D. at the University of Bristol in the UK in 1983 under the supervision of Professor John Steeds. His post-doctoral studies took him to Argonne National Laboratory (working for Dr. Nestor Zaluzec) and The Microelectronics Center of North Carolina. John Mansfield has been managing the North Campus EMAL for nearly 17 years. Dr. Mansfield is assisted by Dr. Kai Sun, a Research Associate. Kai has more than 10 years experience in electron microscopy. He earned his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering in 1998 at the Dalian University of Technology in Dalian, China under the supervision of Professor K.H. Kuo (Beijing Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences). Kai joined EMAL in 2003 after working as a postdoctoral research fellows with Dr. L.M. Wang in the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan, with Professor N.D. Browning in the Chemical Engineering and Materials Sciences Department at the University of California - Davis, with Professor X.D. Zou in the Structural Chemistry at the Stockholm University, Sweden. Ying Qi has a 20% appointment in EMAL as an Electronics Engineer (with the remainder of her time spent in MS&E). Haifeng Chen is a Research Investigator from the Dental School and he is an expert in AFM, particularly AFM in fluids. Haifeng has a part time appointment in EMAL and is responsible for training users of the AFMs. A changing cast of assistants help with general lab duties and work on various projects.
